Wednesday was the last day of the “Get Real Club” meetings at Travis Middle School. We ended on a really fun note by holding a mini-talent show. I enjoyed it greatly, even if half the acts involved singing and/or dancing to Justin Beiber music.
What really made me smile was the fact that the kids encouraged and cheered each other on. No one was made fun of. Everyone felt comfortable getting up in front and doing their thing – even the shy ones. Get Real is full of a huge diversity of kids going through difficult circumstances. My goal this year has been to get them to look past the outward appearances of their fellow students. Based on Wednesday, it looks like we actually made some progresss toward that goal. Below are some fun pictures.
The first performance of Justin Beiber’s “Baby, Baby” song. I’m not sure if that’s the name of the song, but he says “Baby, Baby” in it over and over, so I assume that’s the title.
Diana performs a dance to the “Baby, Baby” song.
This young lady’s best talent is softball. Since that’s difficult to display by yourself inside, she brought some trophies and pictures. Rather creative.
Nestor and Oscar perform a skit they wrote themselves. Pretty funny for something written by two goofy 7th graders. They had costumes, props, and everything.
The final “Baby, Baby” performance. This was my favorite. Patricia, on the right is pretty shy and doesn’t have a lot of self-confidence. But she is a really good singer. So it was cool to see her come out of her shell and receive encouragement from her fellow sixth graders.
Get Real Club was great this year. I’m looking forward to what’s in store for the next school year.
